AZLK-2141 Moskvich
History
The last Moskvich and a monument to ambitions that were never realised: a rival to European hatchbacks, undone by the collapse of the USSR and the crisis that followed.
The AZLK-2141 was conceived as a rival to the Volkswagen Golf. Its layout was based on the French Simca-Talbot 1307/1308, but the body and many of the components were substantially reworked in Moscow. The plant's own engine never reached series production, so the car was fitted with the ageing VAZ-2106 or UZAM-331 units. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the crisis of the 1990s finished off both the car and the plant: the line stopped in 2001 and AZLK was declared bankrupt in 2006. Part of the site became the Moskva technology park, and in 2022 the Moskvich marque was revived there.
