History
The first front-wheel-drive VAZ, developed with advice from Porsche engineers. Front-wheel drive, a five-speed gearbox and a sporting hatchback body — a revolution for the plant.
The VAZ-2108 was a genuine break with the past: front-wheel drive, a transverse engine, a five-speed gearbox and a hatchback body were all new to VAZ. Porsche AG engineers advised on the chassis and the car's dynamics. The result was lively and eager, and the “vosmyorka” became a cult car among young drivers and amateur racers. In Europe it sold as the Lada Samara, where its low price and simplicity found a ready market.
