History
The Izhevsk Automobile Plant built cars and motorcycles in Izhevsk, in the Udmurt ASSR. Car production at the Izhmash works began in 1966, when the Soviet industry decided to expand capacity by building Moskvich models under licence.
From 1966 to 1982 the plant built the Moskvich-408 and Moskvich-412 families under the IZh badge. In 1973 it added a design of its own: the IZh-2125 Kombi, the first Soviet hatchback. Its fifth door and folding rear seats — both unusual in the Soviet Union — made it a favourite with practical buyers.
Alongside cars the plant built the famous IZh motorcycles, in huge demand across the country. In 1982 it stopped building the Moscow models and launched its own IZh-2126 Orbita family. In the post-Soviet years the plant struggled financially, and car production ended for good in 2009.
